Tapas & Self-Discipline

Tapas
is a Sanskrit word that means many things to different people. We know it as self-discipline. It is a fierce, burning desire to be the best you can be, which means shifting what you do and how you do it. Having not just the drive, but most importantly, the discipline to attend an in-person yoga class or to do an on-line home practice is key.

Doing the best you can while in class will get you the maximum benefit. Although, a balance between this self-discipline/tapas and no harm/ahimsa of not pushing too far is necessary. Many students find meditation the most challenging thing to do as it involves sitting still. It takes much discipline to go from a heated state in asana to a still state as in Savasana.  You can also practice tapas off your mat by controlling compulsive or aggressive behaviors.

Consider using it as a version of self-discipline the next time you’re in a strong pose that is held for a longer period of time, like Warrior II or Chair pose:

Acknowledge the sensations that are building…

Breathe through them with a sense of discipline…

Feel your strength…

Your legs are supporting you, your core balancing you… …

Take a few more deep breaths…

Feel what is it like to breathe through a challenge…

Is there a challenge you are dealing with in life right now that you can envision breathing through…

What is it…

You’ve got this…

3 more deep breaths…

Release…

Shake it out and let go!
