The Importance of Lung Health

Thursday, July 9, 2020

We often don’t think about the important role our lungs play in keeping us strong and well. It's not until we experience problems breathing that we take notice. But the truth is, like the rest of our body, our lungs need daily care and attention.

Breathing feeds oxygen to every cell in the body. Without sufficient oxygen, people are more prone to health problems and disease. Ordinary, everyday breathing isn't enough to keep the oxygen flowing through the body at peak levels. The daily practice of yoga can help in strengthening the muscles of the chest, increase lung capacity and boost oxygen intake. Certain asanas can strengthen the back muscles and increase oxygenation and lung capacity.

Urdhva Dhanurasana, otherwise known as upward facing bow or wheel pose (Chakrasana), is an intermediate/advanced backbend that offers many benefits to our lungs and more.

Benefits

·       Stretches the chest and lungs

·       Strengthens the arms and wrists, legs, buttocks, abdomen, and spine

·       Stimulates the thyroid and pituitary

·       Increases energy and counteracts depression

·       Therapeutic for asthma, back pain, infertility, and osteoporosis

·       Promotes courage and compassion

·       Enlivens the chakras

·       Increases energy

Note: It is recommended to hold wheel pose for one to three minutes, gradually increasing the time with practice. Don’t fuss if you have not incorporated wheel pose into your practice yet, as bridge pose is an earlier stage of the asana that may feel more accessible. Yoga poses, particularly advanced poses, have extreme health benefits but also contraindications. You should perform this pose with extreme caution if you have suffered a back injury, have carpal tunnel syndrome, heart irregularities, headaches, diarrhea or high or low blood pressure.
